Homemade Cleaning Products
There are many reason why a large number of people have decided to use homemade cleaning products instead of commercial brands. For some, the switch is due to economic reasons and it’s cheaper to use cleaners made from objects found around the house. One homemade product can clean a multitude of surfaces. Chemical products generally target one specific area or duty, so many different kinds need to be bought just to clean up around the house. Others choose to use cleaning products that are homemade because they are safer than chemical cleaning products and are more environmentally friendly. Chemical cleaners can have toxic fumes, cause harmful reactions on skin, and some chemical cleaners can be carcinogenic. Homemade cleaners can do just as good a job without all the harmful side effects.

Homemade cleaning products can generally be made from simple items found around the home, such as in the pantry. Or the ingredients can be bought at the store, usually at a low cost. There are many different types of sprays and solutions that wont empty your pocket or leave a big carbon footprint.
One of the most common and versatile natural cleaning product is white vinegar. Vinegar acts like a natural all-purpose cleaner. The mild acids in vinegar dissolve dirt, grime, soap scum, and hard water deposits on smooth surfaces, but it’s gentle enough to even use on hardwood floors. But the acids are strong enough to eat away at marble or tile grout. It also works as a natural deodorizer, absorbing odors instead of just masking them. And the vinegar smells goes away when it dries. To use, put it in a spray bottle and dilute it with water. It can be used in the kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere in the house that needs a good scrubbing.
Another handy product to have on hand is lemon juice. It is another natural substance that can be used to clean the home. Like vinegar, it is also acidic and can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon juice is also good for shining brass and copper. It can be made into a cleaning paste if it’s mixed with baking soda. Baking soda can also be sprinkled onto a lemon half to be used as a scrubber for dishes, surfaces, and stains. Lemon juice also makes a great furniture polish if mixed with olive oil.
As mentioned in the last paragraph, baking soda is another popular cleaning agent. It works great to scrub surfaces like commercial abrasive cleansers. Baking soda works best as a deodorizer. Put it in a container in your fridge to absorb stinky food odors. Put it anywhere in the house that needs to be deodorized, like a smelly litterbox.
Switching to cleaning products that are homemade doesn’t take a lot of effort, just a change in habit. Using cleaning products from items found around the home can have many benefits. From having a less toxic home, to saving a few dollars, it definitely doesn’t hurt to try.
